When former Munich schoolteachers Otmar and Sonya Schaedle dropped anchor at Bequia in 1978, they hadn't planned on becoming innkeepers, much less discovering and restoring an 18th-century French estate house and sugar mill.

Now, two decades later,  they've added a pool with jacuzzi and waterfall to what is perhaps already the most romantic place to stay on Bequia.

The architecture reconstructed stone archways and walls, heavy handmade wood doors and rafters; and the cuisine, a potpourri of West Indian, French, and German fare, with most of the ingredients grown on the property. If you bring your family, be prepared: the Schaedle children own a menagerie -- a donkey, a dog, cats, peacocks, a parrot, parakeets, a rabbit, and chickens -- that'll have your kids demanding the same.

Local market shopping and provisioning will be handled by staff as part of the service. The cost of the food and beverages, however, is additional and will be added to the final bill. Daily menu planning will be in consultation with the guests, if desired.
