Easter Holiday on Carriacou
As we start our Easter
Holiday,
life
returns to a peaceful relaxation.
...leisurely awakening around 9:30
...nice shower with water heated by the sun, lots of lather, shampoo
piled high.
Then, CLICK, electricity gone, water pump off, no more water.
Here I stand, Frosty the Suds-Man.
The arguing from the street brings me to the window on Main Street,
Hillsborough.
Out hangs The Suds-Man and I remark:
Hey, guys, real nice. Just 2 more minutes mon and I finish.
Now look, here I stands - the Suds-Man.
Oh, well, it's Easter Good Friday and everything is closed anyway.
I decide to just sit on the Back Porch, have a cup of Columbian coffee,
and listen to my skin crack as the suds dry out.
Billy Bones drops by and out comes more Columbian....
coffee of course. Bones is hungry and everythings is closed. He started
out in Harvey Vale and until now,
nothing found to eat. I recommend Silver Beach. Next drops by
Harry from Hermitage who has just returned
from a film shoot aboard Carriacou's new Alexiana
High-Speed Express Catamaran.
Yesterday, skipper Caton, Pia Alexis, Harry and I talked about adding
this new service
to Grenadines.net. So Harry took his digital equipment on the 06:00
Carriacou to Grenada trip and then back
on the 09:00 Grenada to Carriacou return. While Harry and Bones talked
about where to get some food
I watched the video and ran through the stills of Harry's digitalization
direct from his camera.
But, since the electricity was cut off while the guys argued outside
over some work they had to get done,
Harry and I could go no further with the Alexiana's digitizing.
I decided to go take a swim. Down the steps, across Main Street, and onto Hillsborough Bay.
With mask and snorkel I swim down to the Jetty and stop off at Mary Lou's on the way back for conversation and a cold Carib beer. Flashbacks of the American TV series Magnum P.I. somehow always come to mind, as I have no trouble comparing my view with Hawaii's magnificance.
Sadly, Mary Lou returns home to Hull, Massachusetts on Sunday.
Another winter getaway draws inevitably to a close for another year.
The beach is empty except for a few local children.
Mary Lou and I say our Goodbyes and I return to the office.
I notice a small jeep pass by after waiting patiently for a sheep
and two babies to walk down
Hillsborough's Back Street. This is the only entrance to town from
the Airport so I can just imagine the
two tourist's conversation as they pass by my porch: "Sure is laid-back
here."

High Season - Low Season
The busiest part of the tourism year has now concluded. We now have entered perhaps my favorite time of year in The Grenadines. The period from 16APR thru 14DEC is commonly refered to as our "Low Season" when our islands are least visited. Unlike in the so-called "High Season" when room rates are higher and still vacancies are difficult to find; and our tiny pieces of paradise become temporary hideaways for tourists worldwide. So now we return to that idyllic way of life - our clear water and white sandy beaches are once again returned to our custody after the assualt by tourism.
Hogwash... the idea that we have a "High Season"
tourism assault is just plain hogwash.
A mass of tourists for us is to see 2-3 people together on a street or beach. We never have floods of visitors. Our cruiseship visitors put to shore perhaps 60 people. Our hotels, guesthouses and villas are perhaps 25-30% booked. With a total of 100 rooms islandwide, Carriacou could fill each room with two people. These 200 tourists would be lost along our sandy beaches and scattered among our small villages making you feel that you alone are here to expierience our tiny pieces of paradise. Our weather is year round beautiful and each island is always peaceful, deliciously quiet, and perfect as a getaway destination. And frankly, I never really understood that part that our tourism season is just the four months between December and April. I see our many European friends spending the months of August and September with us; our secluded sandy beaches also become June and July escapes from the packed beaches in the United States each Summer; and our sailing yachts pushed by gentle Tradwinds - meander liesurely between islands .
That leaves just May for me.
Ah.... another month in paradise!

Water Situation in The Grenadines.
Let's talk a few minutes about the water situation here.
As we enter our "Dry Season," the first word that comes to mind is
scarce.
Then next is precious.
To me, when I hear that anything is both scarce and precious,
I automatically think about saving as much of it as possible.
I'd save first of all because it's the prudent thing to do.
I'd save because of investment in the future...
I'd save because to pass along to the next generation is a good thing...
Doesn't really matter to me whether we're talking about diamonds, family
heirlooms, money, or...
Cool, refreshing, life-giving
Water.
Though surrounded by perhaps the world's clearest, cleanest and
colorful ocean water
there is no source of fresh, treated water here except that that
falls from the sky,
is collected on the roofs house-by-house, business-by-business
and stored in underground cisterns and pumped
back into the house on demand.
Methods for maintaining water quality therefore changes
house-by-house and business-by-business.
Some introduce small, living fish called "millions" into the cistern
and even the government claims that these little fish are quite
effective
at feasting on whatever attempts growth within the cistern.
We're talking here about mosquitos.
Others swear that a cup of good old CLOROX bleach does the job.
Others attach purifiers to their kitchen taps for use when drawing
drinking water
and some brands such as PUR make claims about microbiological improvements.
I, myself, have
chosen to go the route of boiling every drop
that makes it toward drinking water or ice cubes.
In my nearly ten years living here on Carriacou,
I have never suffered the stomach aches and pains
that can ruin a trip.
So, I guess the 1st
Lesson about the Water Situation is:
Always boil the water used to drink or make ice cubes,
or drink bottled water, and
don't ask for ice in mixed drinks unless you know
they boil it first.
The
Grenadines.net Internet Café uses only boiled water for drinks and
ice cubes.
Now that we understand the water situation, let's continue with the
2nd Lesson:
conservation
of a precious resource.
Residents flush toilets after No. 2 but not No.1
Always fix a leaking toilet or faucet valve and never let it trickle.
When taking a shower, wet yourself down and turn off the water.
Suds up and then turn on the water for a quick rinse.
Remember... most islanders have no running
water
and the water contained in two, white plastic buckets
clean-up after dinner, provides a bath, or launders their always
spotless clothing.
Water on Carriacou is a scarce and precious
item.
Please help us to save it as much as possible.

The red Flamboyant tree has burst into flower.
From the Back Porch the red blends brilliantly with the green of the
50-odd coconut palms,
breadfruit, and bushes in view. Evidently in appreciation of this month's
daily brief showers,
Carriacou's vegetation is now on display.
Perhaps the most comfortable and convenient place to enjoy it all
is from our own
