They fly today from Carriacou to Barbados where they'll spend a few days before going back to their home in Iowa. I spent the rest of the day puddling around with the hard drives on an office e-mail computer. It's two seeks into the Low Season and already the pace has relaxed. Ah.... another day in paradise!

I printed tickets for a bingo sponsored by the BBH Women's Organization this weekend. YAHOO has finally gotten around to indexing Grenadines.net. It was worth the wait as now anyone searching for GRENADINE ISLANDS or GRENADINES will be taken to our website. Have a look and seeMore good news, Netscape has added a new category to its OPEN DIRECTORY. You guessed it, the new category is GRENADINE ISLANDS. I consider this a major accomplishment as Carriacou and Petite Martinique are a part of Grenada while the other islands are a part of St. Vincent & The Grenadines. Now it doesn't matter... we have our own category. Have a look and see. The Grenadines.net Chat Room is up and running. Come visit and have a chat. I tend to be in the chat room between the hours of 5-6pm East Coast USA time. Now that the High Season is over, room reservations are slowing down but our private, crewed Yacht Charters are still booking strong. Come Sail The Grenadines! I am planning a visit to Bequia and Union Island next month so watch their homepage for up-dates. Don't forget.... May 9th is Mother's Day. I printed a card for my mom who lives in the States... yes, a real card not a cyberspace one 'cause she doesn't have a computer.

Palm's new Island owners are expected to close their Hotel soon to get started on well deserved repairs, up-grades and improvements. This effort could take six months or more. We are indeed happy that our privately owned Palm Villas remain available without interruption. Hillsborough Bay - Original Watercolor by Christian Egemar from NorwayMopion - Off Petit St. VincentTomorrow is a holiday as the West Indies plays Australia in a test cricket match in Grenada. Grenada has built a new sports stadium and this will give them a chance to show it off worldwide. The M/V Alexia III departs Carriacou tonight at 3:00 am for Grenada. Should be a lively time had by all. Roy, a man from England building a home with his wife on Carriacou, was in to check his Hotmail. Two friends of mine from the States who now live in their home here on Carriacou, Connie and Larry, were by to chat. They told me of their recent flirt with fame when a television production team from Holland used them for filming.  It seems the producers will be running advertisements locally on Netherlands TV and wanted to show Sandy Island, Mopion and Petit Tabac and "happy tourists" enjoying them.  They stayed just a few minutes before going to the beach to enjoy the sunny day and the crystal clear waters on Hillsborough Bay. Margaret Alan, a lady from England who lives in Hillsborough, dropped by to send an e-mail. Her computer is down for repairs.  One of the owners of Bardoni Bros. Ice cream Parlor was in to do some printing. A German man, Georg, was in to talk about his S/Y Rose - For Sale by Owner. A man from Canada, Don, was in to check his Hotmail and surf the world wide web.

10-11 April 1999 - Weekend
High Temperature 88ºF- Low Temperature 75ºF
Heavily overcast. Humid.
Dexter Leggard, Secretary for the Carriacou Regatta Committee, dropped by the office on Friday afternoon. We up-dated his web site with the 1998 results and published the 1999 Program of Activities. The 1999 Regatta is set for 25 July - 3 August. On Saturday morning I was again awakened from my sleep by the sounds of "Fatman" butchering animals on the Back Street behind my office/home. If you are ever on Carriacou on a Saturday morning just before daybreak, make sure you stop by and see for yourself. I am hearing rumbles about Hillsborough and Petite Martinique getting water desalinization facilities. Hillsborough's is supposedly to be sited on part of the Bishop's College property on the northern edge of town and negotiations for the land are underway. Speaking of water, Carriacou's only source is what falls from the sky and is collected into individual cisterns so always be careful when using it. Save some for the next person: that's our motto. So far this year we have been blessed with above average accumulation. Better to save it in case we get less than average this summer and fall.

I have received lots of compliments on the music played on the various Grenadines.net web pages. To save these MIDI files to your hard drive, RIGHT mouse click on the music box icon and SAVE AS. You can then use your media player software to listen to your favorites.

Views Out The Window...
It's Saturday afternoon and I sit looking out the window drinking my Colombian blend coffee. Main Street, Hillsborough is barely two lanes wide and traffic flows one way south toward the Airport.  A few hundreds yards from the window you find Dollarman's Shop and opposite that is Kaiso's Shop. This area is always congested with cars parked along the road in front of Dollarman. Well, I noticed a car stopped in front of Kaiso and behind it comes the large, garbage truck. The truck pulls behind the car and the driver starts shouting "Move on... don't be blocking de traffic" Words are shouted between the occupants of the car and the truck, but does the car move forward allowing the truck to pass? Of course, not! Not until the lady from Kaiso's Shop brings the owner of the car his soft drink and sandwich. He then immediately continues his merry way while eating his sandwich and drinking his cold imbibe. Ah.... another day in paradise on MAIN street. Imagine how the drivers drive in the small villages!

Brigantine Eye of The WindDid I ever tell you the one about.....

Two guys from the States Sailing on the Brigantine "Eye of The Wind"
hopped off on Canouan to quickly check-out the new Carenage Bay - Beach Club & Golf Course.

... I went to Canouan and saw the new resort.  It is real nice.  The swimming
pool is real long, but not so wide nor deep.  I walked across the pool
bridge and looked down into the bar area.  It is still needing some work.
No one was in the pool.  They said it was 15% occupied.  There was workers
all over the place.  It was nice to see so many people working.  That resort
will bring a lot of money into that island.  It is good.  They are even
renovating the church.  I took some pictures there, also.

... Then, my friend, Dundee, and I hiked over the hill and down to the small beach with the green
pumping station.  We were to wave at the ship anchored off, and we were to
be picked up.  After a half hour of waving, and not noticed, one of the
Carenage Bay workers said "You want me to call the ship with my radio/phone?"  We said
sure, that would be great.  Within two minutes the inflatable was on its way
to pick us up. Primitive islands, my foot.  The Grenadines are more advanced
civilly than most places here in California. - BIG DADDY - Burlingame, CA

9 April 1999 - Friday
High Temperature 86ºF- Low Temperature 75ºF
Welcome rain fell last night. Heavily overcast. Humid.

RastasLast night I met with a group of Carriacou's Rastafarians. We talked about building a new business providing island restaurants, hotels and individuals with fresh produce. On Carriacou, the Rastas are our main farmers producing pigeon peas, melons, lettuce, potatoes, yams and other fresh produce.  Our first meeting centered on producing a list of products that are currently in demand and when and by whom. With this list, the farmers will then decide on the items that they can produce here. After discussions with the buyers, we will then grow the crops on contract rather than just planting the fields and then hoping that when the produce is picked, that we can find buyers. The current system results in periods when supply outstrips demand and prices paid to the farmers fall below their production costs or crops just rot in the fields. At other times, fresh produce just isn't available, except what comes up from Grenada on the boat twice a week, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
I printed 200 Crew Lists for Carriacou Immigration to clear-in/out visiting yachts. I am working on a web site for the Carriacou Immigration/Customs/Port Authority and I intend on publishing a new Homepage with up-to-date news and information coming from the Government of Grenada affecting visiting yachts, i.e. Port & Customs charges, statistics on visiting yachts, anchoring restrictions, etc. Watch this space for up-dates.  I received an inquiry from a man in the States looking for 5-8 acres on Carriacou or Petite Martinique, preferably beach front, for the construction of a 40 room small resort, each of 10 buildings holding four units, one bedroom and two bedroom buildings. I received another inquiry from a man in the States interested in selling Northern White Cedar, Eastern White pine, and several varieties of hardwoods. Captain John Smith of the Mermaid of Carriacou was in to answer his e-mail. We also made contact with garmin.com to get a RMA number to return for repairs his GPS12XL Personal Navigator. A couple from the States Sailing The Grenadines were in to connect their notebook to JUNO_MAIL.

We hail this long overdue project as a dynamic activity in promoting the essence of our valuable cultural heritage and art form of the African and European influences and distinctive practices, authentic with their diversification for well over 350 years.

It is our resolve therefore to reconstruct a physical suite at the Belair Great House facilities to reflect a blend of aristocracy and folkocracy so that our "children may be as plants grown-up in their youths, after the similitude of a palace."  That our visitors, natives and the world at large could experience, education through information disseminated - a multi-disciplined approach to applied sociology, anthropology, musicology, drama, dance, craft, literature, history, philosophy and religion in a sincere appreciation of the human values and ecological environment. Contact Mr. Fleary with offers of support.

Views Out The Window...
It's Thursday afternoon and I'm sitting in the office, drinking a freshly squeezed grapefruit juice and looking out the window.  I see a small white kite flying high above Hillsborough's Back Street in a perfectly blue sky. It's quitting time and the vehicles pass by heading to points South such as Lauriston, L'Esterre, Harvey Vale and Belmont.
It seems that on Carriacou, if you are one of the lucky few to own a private transport, then the thing to do is to paint a name on it. In big letters right there on the front windshield above the sun visor and just below the beginning of the roof. FIRE IS LOVE (a small black jeep owned by an ancient American, well, he looks to be about 105, who built a hillside home in Harvey Vale overlooking Tyrrel Bay) LIVE & LEARN  (a red bus owned and driven by Linky from Belmont) GEMINI (a dark green bus owned and driven by Norbert Allert) MR JOHN ( a small pick-up truck used by Francis Gay's New Age Construction) BOTH AH DEM (a red bus owned by Linky but driven by D.J. Putty) NO RIDERS (a white pick-up owned by GRENLEC, the island electricity company) RUDE BOY (a small blue pick-up truck owned and driven as a taxi by Jeffus Samuel)  LUXIN (a white bus owned and driven by Lennox) CHEERFUL, SKIPPER, CHRIS, SPRIG, SILVER LINING, D OFFICER, BIG DOLLAR, ABU, BLONDE, MY VISION IS BOLD, SPEAK THE TRUTH, DE BEAST, CHOICE, THE KING, D OFFICER, ALWAYS READY, TWO BOTHERS
