High Temperature 89ºF- Low Temperature 76ºF
Beautiful sunny day with blue skies and a few, puffy white clouds.  Nice wind.
Well, tommorow begins the 1999 Hurricane Season. The so-called "experts" are predicting more storms than last year. Remember, though, from end to end the Caribbean Region is huge, and a storm in one area doesn't necessarily mean a canceled trip for you to The Grenadines. The last one to hit here was in the 1950s.  We are located at the southern edge of the so-called "Hurricane Belt" and most likely to remain outside of any danger zone. If a storm comes through the week before your planned trip, don't succumb to media hype -- the world isn't ending -- look at the island forecast
here on Grenadines.net first!

The children from the Hillsborough schools paraded today in Hillsborough in support of
Worldwide No Tobacco Day.
They carried signs saying:
Cigarettes Cause Cancer - Leave the Pack Behind.
Captain Thomas of S/Y Leona was by to chat. A young local man, Kervin Isaac from L'Esterre, stopped in to make a phone call on my Net2Phone connection. A young man from Switzerland and his girlfriend from Brazil stopped by to check their Hotmail and surf the world wide web.

29-30 May 1999 - Weekend
High Temperature 89ºF- Low Temperature 76ºF
Beautiful sunny days with blue skies and a few, puffy white clouds.  Nice wind.

Another quiet weekend on Carriacou. On Saturday morning, I had planned on getting my hair cut at 9am at Florence's Salon International. But just as I was preparing to leave, the island electricity went out. So, I opened the office instead. Captain John Smith of the Mermaid of Carriacou stopped by with his guest from the States, Diane. The guest is a professional photographer and after a few minutes of chat they headed off to take pictures of goats, sheep, donkeys and other animals. I closed the office and went down to Silver Beach. Captain Thomas from S/Y Leona took me out in his dinghy. I wanted to have a look around the bay with my mask and snorkel to try and locate a new mooring for him to use. Years ago I had stayed off Silver Beach for six months on a yacht and I went looking for the mooring we had used. I found one. I noticed increased levels of sea grass on the bay's white, sand bottom. Normally, the sea turtles keep the grass under control by eating it. I noticed hundreds, if not thousands, of white sea urchin eggs scattered throughout the grass. The French guests to Carriacou consider these a delicious delicacy. I, however, consider them a hazard should they get stepped on with their long, white spines. Fortunately, they are located in deep water so as long as I kept swimming I didn't have to worry about stepping on them.  After my swim/snorkel, I made use of Silver Beach's showering facilities and then had lunch on the outside patio overlooking the beach. Silver Beach managers Duncan and Avril joined us while the hotel staff prepared the beach bar for a party later that evening for the film crew completing their work. Most of the crew will depart Carriacou tommorow but a few plan to stay on a few more days to relax and unwind.
Captain Thomas made plans for next Friday, 4 June, my birthday,
to sail up to Bequia for a few days.
Duncan and Avril will join us as they have not as yet had an opportunity to visit the southern Grenadines.
We'll pull anchor around 2pm and set sail to Mayreau where we'll overnight. Next morning we'll stop briefly on Canouan to visit the Carenage Bay and then sail on up to Bequia. Gordon and Avril will fly back to Carriacou while Thomas and I take care of business. Thomas and I should be back on Carriacou before week's end. I want to start building-up the Bequia Homepage and to up-date the information contained there. More on this in next month's diary.

Netscape's OPEN DIRECTORY search has a new category: Grenadine Islands. I am the on-line Netscape editor for this category. This search engine is also being used by LYCOS. Try the search function or follow the categories to Recreation/Travel/Destinations/Caribbean. There you will find Grenadine Islands and then subcategories for each of the islands: Carriacou, Petite Martinique, Petit St. Vincent, Palm, Union, Mayreau, Tobago Cays, Canouan, Mustique and Bequia. This is the same organizational structure as I use here at Grenadines.net. As the Internet grows at a staggering rate, automated search engines and directories run by small editorial staffs are unable to cope. Search engines are finding it increasingly difficult to provide useful results to search queries, while commercial directories are suffering from link rot and less comprehensive site listings as a relatively few editors struggle to keep pace with the growth of the web. That's where the Open Directory Project comes in. The goal of the Open Directory Project is to produce the Internet's most comprehensive directory by relying on a vast army of knowledgeable volunteer editors.

Views out the window...
Schreeeeeech!! Schreeeeeech!! Quiet, then the sounds of a cutlass.... Chop! Chop! Yes, it's just before daylight on Saturday morning and I am awakened, as always, by Fatman slaughtering pigs, sheep, goats and who knows what else on Hillsborough's Back Street just behind my office. He's chopping on an old wooden table in front of a deserted shack of a board building that stands unloved and unwanted except on Saturdays when Fatman sets-up his local butcher shop.  Today's a Holiday on Carriacou so by 10:00am the locals have already picked-up their fresh meat for today's meal and life returns to normal.  I notice the shops are closed. I see no vehicles moving.

Eating Out in The Grenadines...

Eating Out in The GrenadinesEating Out in The Grenadines

During my almost ten years here, I am discovering more and more excellent eating establishments. My Print Shop prints their menus and I am noticing a tendency to show more and more items making for an ever bigger menu.

Let me propose the following:
When eating out in The Grenadines, always ask about today's special
and always take it over ordering from the items printed on the menu.
I don't mean to infer anything except: why not eat what we're eating when you're here?
Why order items and then compare it to that available back home?
There is an incredible variety of local, island produce and
our local recipies are to be enjoyed.
Here's my current list of my favorite eating establishments:
( B=Breakfast  D=Dinner  L=Lunch )
Carriacou:  Roundhouse (D), Poivre et Sel French (D), Callaloo (L)
Petite Martinique: Palm Beach (L,D)
Petit St. Vincent: Resort (B,L,D)
Palm Island: Resort (B,L,D)
Mayreau: Saltwhistle Bay (B,L,D), Dennis' Hideaway (B,L,D), James' Island Paradise (B,L,D)
Canouan: Canouan Beach (B,L,D), Tamarind Beach (B,L,D), Carenage Bay (B,L,D)
